The Spotted Lanternfly (Lycorma delicatula) is an invasive pest from Asia, first detected in Pennsylvania in 2014. While these insects can hop or fly short distances, they primarily spread by laying eggs on transported goods. This has led to their rapid expansion across states like New Jersey, Ohio, Michigan, and more. Their main target is the Tree of Heaven, but they also pose a serious threat to many other tree species, including those in Connecticut, where nearly half the forest is at risk.
Both adult and nymph Spotted Lanternflies feed on the sap of leaves, branches, and trunks, causing stress to the trees. As they feed, they excrete a sticky substance known as "honeydew," which promotes the growth of sooty mold, a black fungus that’s easily recognizable. While mature, healthy trees can typically survive an infestation, young saplings and stressed trees may not. Prolonged feeding also makes trees more vulnerable to secondary pests and diseases, especially during drought conditions.
