Plant Health Care Services

A home is one of the biggest investments most people will ever make. Landscape plants and trees are an integral part of that investment. A well-landscaped and maintained yard can add up to 15% to a property's value. As with any investment, there is maintenance involved.

Reach out to Greenleaf Services for exceptional plant maintenance services. We'll work to improve the appearance and vitality of your landscape. Our experts will visit your property and come up with a customized plan to care for your plants. Call us today for a FREE estimate!

We Offer the Following Types of Programs

Traditional Plant Health Care

Our Horticulturist will visit your property to inspect your trees and shrubs and develop a customized program that includes a season-long treatment for insect and disease infestation as well as fertilization needs. All applications are specifically listed and priced. When the timing is right, we will call the day before to let you know one of our plant health care professionals will complete the appropriate applications.

Integrated Pest Management
This is also a custom proposal based on a visit to your property. Insect and disease control, however, is encompassed in an all-inclusive, per-visit price. A trained Plant Health Care technician makes six monitoring visits to your property throughout the growing season. They will inspect the various ornamental trees and shrubs and determine whether treatments are needed.

He/she will come by frequently enough to spot problems before they get out of control. This way, it is possible to keep insect populations down and fungal infections under control with minimal pesticide use.

At the end of each visit, the technician will write up a report that explains any treatments performed as well as notes pertinent to maintaining the health of your plants (watering, removal of excessive mulch, pruning, etc.).

Organic Plant Health Care

This is where we use low-toxicity alternatives to treat insects and diseases or fertilize plants in your landscape with little or no negative environmental impact.

Actively Aerated Compost Tea (AACT)
This is the leaching of microorganisms from compost into aerated water. It creates a brew rich in beneficial fungi and bacteria. With our addition of specialized foods, the microorganisms rapidly multiply. This tea is then applied to the root zone of stressed trees and shrubs, replenishing depleted soils and allowing plants to provide for themselves. The process mimics nature and will act as a natural fertilizer that allows plants to grow without the need to introduce synthetic fertilizers.

Here are some benefits of AACT:

  • The beneficial microorganisms may out-compete disease organisms for foods and space.
  • The bacteria and fungi can repair the damage caused by chemicals and toxins by consuming them.
  • The bacteria and fungi create a better soil structure, increasing the rooting depth of your trees and shrubs and the water holding capacity of the soil.
  • When we add AACT to trees and shrubs it improves the soil structure and helps break down organic matter.

For this reason, we like to apply it after plants that we have vertically mulched. The combination of mulching, tea applications, and our organic fertilizer dramatically improves plant health.

Vertical Mulching
This is the process of aerating and adding organic matter, Mychorizae (beneficial fungi), and organic fertilizer to the root zone of selected plants.  For more information, click here.

Organic Deep Root Fertilization
One of the most beneficial treatments we can provide for increasing tree and shrub vigor in the landscape is periodic fertilization. Greenleaf Services utilizes a custom blended liquid organic fertilizer with bio-stimulants that is injected into the root zone within the drip line of specific plants.

This process aerates and waters the soil around the root system as it applies an organic fertilizer containing fish emulsion, kelp, and humic acid. The result is the re-vitalization of the soil that has lost the natural components of a woodland environment. Unlike synthetic fertilizers, it does not create a massive flush of growth that can promote insect and disease damage.

Important Seasonal Tips for You to Know

Spring

  • Inspect trees and shrubs for snow and ice damage.
  • Prune and shape if needed.
  • Plant some shrubs as soon as they become available in the spring. Do this as early as possible to allow plants to become established before the warm summer months.
  • Don't forget to check irrigation systems for adequate coverage when turned on for the season.
  • Remove excess mulch if it obscures the trunk flair of trees and shrubs by more than 3 inches.
  • Apply mulch to planting beds where needed. Do not over-mulch, use two-three inches only.
  • Prune recently flowered shrubs.
  • Put tropical house plants stressed from winter outside in late May. Initially, put them into the shade and gradually move them into a sunnier location if required.
  • Turn on the water supply to outdoor spigots.

Summer

  • Check irrigation for adequate coverage and saturation levels.
  • Temporarily readjust or water by hand when experiencing drought-like conditions.
  • Remember, new plants will need individual attention regardless of irrigation due to a limited root system.
  • Prune recently flowered shrubs, so they will have time to regenerate flower buds for next year.
  • Have your trees inspected for structural stability before the windy season.

Fall

  • Bring in the house plants that have spent the summer outside.
  • Mulch your trees and shrubs to help reduce winter desiccation (drying).
  • Water dry trees and shrubs to prepare them for the long winter season.
  • Plant bulbs for springtime flowers.
  • Turn off the water supply to outdoor spigots.
  • Apply deer repellants. Deer feed on your ornamentals more in the winter than any other season.
  • Apply anti-desiccants to new plants or plants prone to winter desiccation.
  • Warn your snowplow operator of obstacles to avoid.
  • Mark the drive with small posts to define the drive area.

Winter

  • Complete dormant season pruning of fruit trees, etc.
  • Be sure to clear newly fallen snow off small trees and shrubs to prevent damage.
  • Clear away snow from walks, etc. manually, to reduce the amount of de-icing products used.
